The Metropolitan Museum of Art, or The Met, is leveraging immersive technology to revolutionize how visitors engage with its vast collection. Through a partnership with Atopia, The Met has developed two immersive experiences: Dendur Decoded and Oceania: A New Horizon of Space and Time. These experiences are designed to extend the museum experience beyond the physical walls, offering visitors new ways to explore art, history, and culture. The Met's approach to immersive technology is characterized by a focus on accessibility, reach, and long-term preservation. By making these experiences available through web browsers and Meta Quest VR headsets, The Met aims to reach a broader audience, including students, educators, and curious visitors, regardless of their hardware ownership. The project also serves a broader purpose than visitor engagement alone. The same digital assets used to create the immersive experiences can also support conservation, research, documentation, and future interpretation of the collection. The Met's approach to immersive technology is a testament to its commitment to innovation and accessibility, while also preserving its rich history and cultural heritage for future generations.
