SWISS A330-300 Economy Class Review: Zurich to Chicago (ZRH-ORD) - Food, Seats, & More! (2026)

Review: SWISS A330-300 Economy Class Zurich To Chicago

SWISS has a solid economy class offering on its A330-300, with excellent onboard dining and a comfortable seat. However, there are some drawbacks, too. My family and I flew from Zurich to Chicago on a SWISS A330-300, marking our first long-haul flight in SWISS economy since the pandemic's peak in 2021. We arrived at Zurich Airport (ZRH) about two hours before our flight, anticipating potential passport control lines. While we did encounter long queues at midday, we avoided them by taking the elevator to the E Gates and utilizing the SWISS Senator Lounge before boarding.

Boarding commenced 40 minutes prior to departure from gate E26. As we stepped onto the plane, we walked through business class and the front economy class cabin to our seats in the rear economy class cabin, located in row 39. I opted for basic economy tickets, which resulted in auto-assigned seats during check-in. The A330 has a 2-4-2 configuration, except in the rear rows (42-45), where it narrows to 2-3-2. We were seated in a section of four, with a stranger on one of the aisles.

SWISS utilizes the Recaro CL3810 slimline seats, which are well-padded. Each standard seat offers 31 inches of pitch and is 18 inches wide, with a recline of six inches, double what United provides in economy class. While the seat was comfortable, the tight legroom and generous recline made working on my laptop challenging. I struggle to sleep in economy, but the recline might make it easier for others.

The cabin temperature was warm, and there were no personal air vents, a recurring issue on SWISS. Additionally, there were no AC power outlets in economy class, so ensure your devices are charged before boarding. A USB-A port under the seatback monitor provided limited charging options. The cabin cleanliness was satisfactory, but there was dirt and debris around the IFE personal control unit.

SWISS offers a seatback IFE library with movies, TV shows, games, and music. The selection is more limited than on United Airlines, which also operates from ZRH-ORD. The complimentary earbuds were inadequate, and I wish I had brought my own headphones. The Wi-Fi was unreliable, working sporadically and not at all during the final hours of the flight.

SWISS provides three Wi-Fi packages: Messaging (free), Four hours (25CHF/28USD), and Fun flight (35CHF/39USD). The pricing is in Swiss Francs or U.S. dollars, and paying in USD is advisable due to the weakening Swiss Franc. The Four hours package was a good deal, even though the Wi-Fi didn't work.

The onboard dining was a highlight. Shortly after takeoff, water bottles and moist towelettes were offered. Lunch featured cheese cubes, a delicious sparkling wine, and two meal options: vegetarian penne pasta or a chicken dish with creamy sauce and mashed pates. The coffee and cake were excellent, and the 'real' tableware was a nice touch. Mid-flight, chocolate ice cream from Mövenpick was served, and a selection of Swiss-made snacks was available in the rear galley.

Service was attentive, with three rounds of beverages during lunch, frequent water runs, and another round of beverages before landing. Easter bunnies chocolates replaced the usual chocolates before landing. Flight attendants also offered kids' choices from a kid's basket, including a cute bracelet. The lavatories were located between the front and rear economy class cabins, feeling a bit tight.

Despite persistent headwinds causing a 30-minute delay, the overall service and meals were excellent, showcasing Swiss quality. The seat was comfortable but not perfect due to limited legroom and warm cabin temperature. I'm not a fan of economy class, but I wouldn't hesitate to fly SWISS again for the thoughtful menus and excellent service. The experience was below average in most aspects, but the food and service made it memorable. For a comparison, you can read my SWISS A330-300 First Class and Business Class reviews.
